I put them in a paper bag and let them sit outside where they wont get wet. It is ok for the bag to get direct sun in FL, in Phoenix you do that and the seeds cook with the 118 weather!

For me, the easiest way to save sunflower seeds: Put a paper lunch bag over your favorite producing head, clip it with a binder clip, and let it mature for a while. Then when the plant is done flowering, cut off the head and let dry. When dry, put on gloves and massage the seeds off with circular motions. This will be messy!

You should be able to plant them almost year-round, so long as you aren't going to run into frost. (germination 7-21 days and then 30-60 days to flower?)

If the fluff is all gone but the seeds are still white can you cut off the head and dry them then or wait till the seeds turn to black/brown?

I just bought a place with a lot of land, and lo and behold, there's sunflowers on it! I cut off the heads, (my grandmother used to make sunflower seeds with me when I was little) but now I'm interested in keeping some seeds to plant till next year. I have never grown sunflowers myself, but I *think* these are the giant variety, the heads measuring between 1-2 feet across. Can anyone give me tips on saving the seeds for next year, growing sunflowers, and harvesting them? Please! They're very pretty.

shlisten~ depending on the type of sunflower the seeds won't turn black/brown

When I save my sunflower seeds, I wait till all the petals fall off and the flower head has started to droop down and the edges are drying. I cut the flower off and then I find a dry place to lay it. I forget about it for a couple weeks, then I remove the seeds. I store them in a paper bag in case there is still any moisture. Then I plant them when the time is right.

Even though we have cold winters, I have had a few reseed on their own. It's a nice surprise!!
