Am I doing this right? Saving OKRA seed

Hello all,

I am in the process (newbie) of saving my first ever okra seeds. This year I found Louisiana Green Velvet Okra seed for the first time in years. The plants have given a pretty good production  not prolific however. The reason I want to seed save this variety is that the pods have been growing 7-9 inches and remain completely tender. I have been growing okra many years and almost all types get fibrous at 5-6 inches. Even the LGV I grew back in the 80Âs & 90's got fibrous at 5-6 inches. I want to isolate this particular strain to grow it out next year. But -- I am growing 3 types of okra in very close proximity but have done the following:

1. I bag two okra flowers before they open (same plant)

2. I determine when the flowers will open the next day by checking inside the bags each day in the evening

3. I take a q-tip and touch inside both open okra flowers from the same plant and immediately put the bags back on the flowers.

4. I let that okra grow until they get hard and dry and then harvest the pods

Have I got the right of it?

Thanks,

DL

    remy,

Thanks!! I'm excited to try this seed saving. Can't wait until 2010 to determine the success and/or failure of the experiment. If I'm successful I will no longer need to harvest little bitty okra pods!
