Help with peony seeds

Hi,

I've been watching my peony seed pods all summer and most are still green or mostly green. Today, however, I noticed a bunch of pea-shaped seeds on the mulch underneath the plant, but they range in color from light tan to one that's dark brown. The two plants next to the peony are evergreens, so I think these must be peony seeds, but how do I tell? Should I just plant them and see?
