I put them in small containers with moist soil. Once they take, I back off the water and water lightly over the winter.
I have friends who do them in water so I know that can be done.
I don't do Impatiens so I can't help you there. I do coleus which is very easy.

Put a LARGE piece of plain newsprint, or a light colored sheet, under the impatience. The seed pods burst when you touch the plant, then you just collect the copius amounts of tiny seeds from the paper or cloth.

Then you have hundreds of new plants next spring, which will fill in around any you manage to keep through the winter from cuttings!

Hi, Barb! I notice you're from Indiana too! I'm located in Frankfort, just north of Indy. Been having some lovely weather haven't we? But, I'd sure like some rain and soon too! Anyway, you can start your impatien from cuttings and by sticking them in water. But, they do tend to get mushy and die. I'm trying this year to just put a little growth hormone on the stem and plant them in dirt. This was suggested to me here. I did have excellent results starting them from seed for the first time this year. And, they are just gorgeous too. I'm going to do both this year, collect seed and take cuttings. I also just dug one up from a friend last year. They do lose alot of their leaves and are messy during the winter but it came back just as lovely once I transplanted it into a wheelbarrow. In late summer, water can work if the water heats up a bit in the sun. Somehow, fig cuttings overwintered OUTSIDE like this one year...and rooted when I planted them in soil in the spring.

Otherwise, late summer in light soil - peat moss added is nice. Sand works in summer for some reason....but, not in fall.

In summer, I take whole buckets down to the creek and pop them in the sand at the edge of the creek. They root FAST like this.... no rooting hormone needed. If I don't remove them by winter, the strong storms wash them away or they freeze.
