Can anyone help identify this weird seed?

Well, I'm a newbie with the whole seed thing. I was at a friend's house and she had what looked like coreopsis grandiflora but I can't be sure and she has no idea. I grabbed a bunch of the dead flowers and found seeds that look like a spiny tiny snail, or a tiny tail of a sea horse? Does anyone know?

Try calendula. They look like little sea horses.

I second what Bakemom said, sounds like calendula. Very easy to grow (great for a new sower) and they re-seed nicely too.
