Seeds of Native Trees (Southern Ontario)

The last week of August I was visiting friends near Haliburton, Ontario (Z4) and we took a 45 minute walk in the woods. During that time was were able to collect the fresh seeds from only one tree Acer Pensylvanica - Striped Maple, and one tree at that. None of the other trees, Sugar Maple, White Ash, Basswood, Ironwood showed any signs of producing seeds and there were no seeds on the forest floor. This seemed very strange to me and I don't think we were too early or too late.

My question is have others noticed this same situation in our native forests or is this an isolated incident? If not what might be the cause?

Hope you can help.
