Balsam Seed

I have lots of beautiful balsam and would like to harvest the seed. I noticed that there are lots of green pods on the plants. Do I need to let the pods dry before I remove them, or do I remove them green?

RE: Balsam Seed

One of the other names for balsam is "Touch-Me-Not" -- when the seeds are ready the pods explode! Which can make them a little difficult to collect.

On mine the pods tend to turn a little tannish, and the "seam" seems more pronounced when they're ripe. I cup my hand around the pod and tug very gently. If they're ready, the pod will explode in my hand, and it's easy to dump the dark brown round seeds in a bowl to dry thoroughly.

I KEEP CHECKING THE SEED POD AND THEN WHEN I THINK IT
WILL POP I TAKE FILM CONTAINER, CATCH THE SEEDS AND PLANT
IN SPRING. THIS IS A GREAT PLANT AND TOLERATES DROUGHT
AND EASILY TRANSPLANTS
