Tithonia

I'm collecting seeds from Mexican Sunflower. Some of the seeds are brown, some are black. Are they all viable? I don't remember what color the original seeds were that I planted.

Hi Ponder,
I checked mine and they are brown with darker speckles. It is possible they turn darker with age. I wouldn't be too concerned about color. They need to be plump and hard. Ones that didn't fertilize correctly will be flat and flimsy.

Thanks. They are all plump. It surprised me that they look so different.

I picked my first seed head on Monday. I have different shades on mine.

Hi,
I've been picking the seed head apart of a Tithonia, and wondering which part is the seed.

I'm thinking that the bigger thing in the picture above is what projects the seed, and the seed itself is the little black thing.

Am I right?

Thanks,
ellen

Hi Ellen,
In the pic above to the left top is an old flower. To the right top is all the chaff stuff that is left over from breaking an old flower apart to get the seeds out. The Star Trek pin looking(best description I could think of, lol) things that are spread out on the bottom 1/2 of the pic are the seeds. There are small black specks shown around the seeds, but that is just some stray chaff.

RE: Tithonia

thanks Remy,
one more question if you don't mind.
I am clear what is the chaff, but am confused between the 'star-trek' thingie and the black specks.

However, as I was pulling the chaff apart, I noticed there is a "thingie" that is held in the chaff, one thingie per chaff.

I think I'm safe assuming that is the seed?

I tell you, this plant does not like to let go of these things.
First it's got that very sharp seed head, and then the chaff holds on to the seed very tightly.

Thanks again,
ellen

and i'll thank you again next year when my Tithonia are blooming beautifully! :)

Lol, about my Star Trek description. Look at the link below. Tell me the seed doesn' sort of look like the silver part of the pin : )
I'm going to assume you have the seed. If the thingie is like 1/4 inch long, that's it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Star Trek Pin.
