saving squash seeds

This is my first time saving vegetable seeds. I tried saving some seeds from spaghetti squash. I dried them on a paper towel but the seeds were flat when dried and I didn't think there was a viable embryo inside. Are they supposed to be that way? I thought they would be more 'plump' like the ones you get when you buy from a catalogue. (I bought this squash at a farmers market.) I would like to save seeds from a sweet potato variety, an heirloom. Thanks for any help. Marg

Hi Marg,
It sounds like your seeds are no good. They should be a bit plump. If they are easy to bend or break, they are definitely no good. I'm not sure why they would all be no good. I've saved seeds from the local farmer's spaghetti squash and other type and had them have good seeds. I've also grown them out and gotten the correct variety. There is always a chance of crossed squash seeds though.

Thanks remy. Can you tell me if a hybrid variety, Amber Cup, will come true from seed? I also planted Uchiki Kuri but I'm not sure if it is a hybrid or not, have to check that one out. Marg
