Collected Castor bean plant seedswhat next?

I collected some seeds from a Castor bean plant in a public park. It is a red/purple variety, which is what I always wanted. The bottommost pod on the branch was dry looking, but the ones closer to the tip were not. They were still greenish tan with a reddish blush. I took them home, laid them on a paper towel in a room with good air circulation. Within 3-5 days they all looked about the same, dark brown and dry.

I donÂt know how to tell which ones are actually ripe or mature enough to grow. Or if they all are. Do you think the seeds in the pods that were greenish will grow?

What do I do next? Crack open the pods and remove the seeds? Keep them in the pods to protect them until spring? I want to grow these next spring so need to keep them over until then. Are they highly perishable?

I am a seed saving novice: the only ones I have every done have been columbines.

Thanks for the help!
