Moon flower seed pods harvested too early

I think I was too enthusiastic at "un"gardening this weekend. I cleaned off the arch that the moonflowers were on and the seed pods aren't dry yet. After I ripped them down I came in and researched. Duh! Should've left them there. Will they still work next spring drying off the vine?

| The only way to know for sure is to do a test sprouting of them. Some of the embryos may have developed enough to sprout but many will likely not work as the embryos are too immature to germinate or survive. Take a percentage of the seeds you have - 10% of them at least - arrange them in a damp paper towel and put it in a ziplock bag. Place the bag somewhere warm out of direct sun but near light. Watch for sprouting. The % of sprouts you get on the towel will tell you approximately what % of germination you will get from the rest of the seed in the spring. Good luck. Dave |
