I found these seed pods in a friend's driveway. I suspect they are some kind of tree seed but can't ID them.

Looks like Catalpa

Don't think so. Catalpa pods are not flat and the seeds look different too.

Actually, the pods and seeds look nothing like Northern Catalpa. Does Southern Catalpa look differently? Red bud maybe?

They look like black locust seed pods. Are the seeds really hard? I am not familiar with catalpa seed but locust seed around here are quite hard.

Found a good photo at this site: http://www.depauw.edu/univ/naturepark/natural history/black locust.asp?vm=r. They definitely could be black locust. The seeds are hard, similar to a red bud in size, but the pods are almost paper thin.

I'm pretty certain these are black locust. I also have honey locust I collected while cutting wood last weekend.

It might be Mimosa. They look just like the pods all around my friends house.

They also look like Mimosa pods. I guess I will just plant them and see what I get.

What trees are they under/near?

I don't know. They were in my boss's driveway. They had to have blown from a neighbor's tree but I have no idea what her neighbors have. She only has sycamore and a small willow. I thought the tree across the road looked like a red bud, but I just don't think they are red bud.

Redbud was my first thought. I have no idea what the seeds look like, but the pods sure look a lot like redbud pods to me.
