Hosta seeds

I was disappointed when my hosta seed pods never turned black, but I picked a few anyway and put them in small paper bags. What a nice surprise when I opened the bags about three weeks later, and the seed pods had all opened to reveal many black seeds. However, these seeds all seem flat and almost transparent. The hosta plants were expensive, bought at a local speciality nursery, and were the extra large variety with white edging on the leaves. Are these a hybrid that doesn't produce viable seeds?
