should bushel gourd seeds be brown?

trying to save seeds from this year's gourds. First time with this plant, or any hard shelled gourd. I think you are supposed to dry them in the gourd? That's what I did, but the seeds are brown, and the ones I bought to grow these plants were white-ish. Also, they were still a bit damp. Are these seeds any good? The shell seems firm and hard. They seem like they are fuzzy, but not in a moldy kind of way. Almost more like the fuzz on reindeer antlers?

Chocolate brown is good. Dry them some more without heat. Open a few to make sure the embryo is fat. Be sure to scrape the edges and soak overnight before you plant them.

Yes, tan or brown is usually okay. That fuzzy bit is okay, too, it's just part of the seed. Like Rockguy said, dry without excessive heat, which would kill the embryo. As for scraping the edges before you soak them, an emery board is perfect. Sue
