IS IT OPEN TO THE SKY AS WELL AS GETTING DIRECT SUN?
Does it get filered light?

I would classify it as part shade and if the anser is yes to the two questions, there are a wider range of plants that you can grow?

The book that I am reading (Making the Most of Shade by Larry Hodgson) offers a simple and inexpensive test to determine if you have "full sun", "partial shade" or "full shade". Basically, he recommends planting a petunia. Petunias prefer full sun but will tolerate partial shade, and will not tolerate full shade at all. He says:

I plant a few here and there and see how they do. Where they bloom abundantly throughout summer, I know I have sun, even if the spot appeared partially shady to me at first. Where they grow and bloom at least modestly but without the vigor that I know a petunia can have, I know I have partial shade. And where they don't bloom and grow only weakly or even die, I know I have shade.

Of course, this test won't work if you're in a big hurry. Otherwise, sounds like a good test.

I think I will try it as I have no idea as to what is what in my yard and I think it is shadier than what I think it is. Do the petunias have to be in pots or in the ground. Thanks.

2-3 hours of morning sun doesn't sound like alot but if potentilla and clematis (what kind?) grow well there (and bloom) other sun lovers should do fine. :)
