I have an east-facing fence (as in, it's the west fence..) with two doug firs towering over it. It used to have ivy on it, but I pulled it all out.. I put in a bunch of sword ferns in one corner, but I need something taller to put against this 8-9 foot fence, in the spot between the trees. I kinda want something big and impressive and possibly colorful, because you first see the fence from a distance. Would hydrangeas grow there?

I mean, it's not deep-forest dark, but it doesn't get more than a few minutes of sun a day. It's the last place to lose the frost on cold days.
