Tall Shade Plants

Posted by jlsnyder1 9 (My Page) on

The entrance to my garage and to the front door are in shade all day. I feel like they need a tall plant to flank either side of the entrances. I would like something that produces some color against a yellow house. But haven't been able to find anything.
I had some bougainvillea there but they didn't do well and I've replanted those in the backyard sun. Any suggestions?

How much sun does it get...Do you want evergreen? Would a climbing rose do? Hydrangea? Clematis? Viburnum? Pieris? How large an area?

Liatris spicata grows really well in my shade garden, its about 3.5' and I have about 25 in a grouping and wow, nice purple. I would plant something in front and something in back cause the leaves start to fade after mid summer flowering. How about a Rhododendron, some grow 5', very nice flowers, prefers acidic soil (for a blue bloom). You could use evergreen Taxus (Yew), nice piramidal yew is uniform in habit, has dk. green soft glossy needles, and has red berries as a bonus. You could plant around it for added color and interest.
