No direct sun

I live in an apartment and wanted to start growing a few vegetables on my balcony. My problem is no direct sun. Living in phoenix AZ where it gets pretty warm, what are my options if any with no direct sunlight, only shade?

There are a few things which will tolerate less light like swiss chard, and otherwise it's a matter of supplementing light. In the balcony forum there are a few people who have asked this question including someone in AZ :) You may want to head there and see the answers.
