Planting under Locust trees

Hello, been a while since I have been here. I have been trying (unsucessfully) for 3 years to plant something under my Locust trees. The only things that have done well are weeds and the volunteer Locusts. They are on the east side of the property on a rise and have landscape timbers (3 high) around them. The area is approximately 12' x 35'. I have tried Hostas, wild flowers and shade loving flowers. Are the trees themselves killing things off? Would it be better to mulch the entire area and go to container items? Thanks!!

I suspect your problem is you aren't watering enough. Things grow just fine under a locust....of you give them enough water....the tree takes a lot!
