Help me 'disappear' this fence in Michigan!

Hello Kind Helpers!

We need a natural, cottage-style solution to hide a chain link fence along the northern border of our lake lot. The fence belongs to the state because we live next to a public access. There is a nice little woodland strip between the fence and a boat launch.

Does anyone have any good natural-looking screening ideas for a long narrow area that's mostly shady with a max of 3 hrs sun? We'd like to keep it looking cottage-style (old-fashioned/low maintenance) like Grandma would have done. 4-5 feet or taller would be great. One suggestion was the Carolina Allspice...? Anyway, that doggone fence is a drag!

Thankee!

Morning Glories. Plant 'em once and your job is done -- they reseed like crazy. (assuming you don't get a sterile hybrid)

This is the privacy fence along our pool, the first year that I planted MGs along it.

As you can see, the privacy fence has disappeared!

Virgina creeper is what I plan to plant to hide our fence problem. It is invasive if you don't watch it but it also looks good and the leaves turn red in the fall. It is a perennial so you won't have to keep replanting it.
