rhododendrons in shade?...

rightside

I'm kind of new to gardening, and I'm finding that I'm having a hard time with the plants already in my yard. For the most part, I'm required to help them live even when I hate the plants (my uncle wants to keep them even when I would be happier letting them go).

That being said, my current project on "save the existing plants" is to figure out rhododendrons. He has them out front in between three massively old oak trees (maybe 200 years old). Quite frankly, I don't think there is enough room for them there (and there is no room anywhere else either). They are shaded for about half of the day by the thick leaves of the trees above them, and they look like they could and should die at any minute. Is that much shade any good for them?

I'm not really fond of rhododendrons (I tend to think they're ugly) but if anyone has any suggestions on what to do with them I wouldn't mind hearing them.
