How Close to a Bradford Pear Can I plant?

Hi! I'm new to this forum, although not new to gardening. I'm about to start laying out my first shade bed and I'm wondering where should my bed end in relation to a Bradford pear? Do I have to go to the drip line or can I get in as close as 3-4 feet from the trunk?

As close as the roots will let you. You may find that the closer you get to the trunk, the harder it is to dig through the roots.
