pretty and sturdy flowers that thrive in the shade

New to gardening...
I live in AZ (can get very hot and dry) and want to start a small garden on my balcony. It faces north so doesn't get any direct sunlight. Any suggestions on what plant to go w/ that would give me colorful flowers, yet will be sturdy enough for the harsh desert climate? |

| Maybe some kind of climbing rose although you may have to water more frequently. |
