Hanging basket for partial shade

I have a large Northwest facing covered porch where I want to hang lots of baskets. Would Martha Washington geraniums work in this light situation? It will get several hours of afternoon sun. I also want some trailing plants - I prefer purple, reds, yellows. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What about begonias...and hanging Helichrysum or variegated Plectranthus. The geraniums need alot of sun but depending on just how much you get they should do fine. They are great in hanging baskets. Think about some perennials to stick in there also that will take that amount of sun...doesn't just have to be annuals.

Iresine. It roots easily in water and grows fast, trails almost too well, don't plant too much or it tends to crowd other plants. It looks spectacular when the sun hits it, looks red, but foliage is reddish, purplish and green. I rooted a bunch over the winter and have ordered some begonia bulbs and will fill in with iresine. The basket is in mostly shade (a very large one), but the iresine will grow so long the sun will hit it. I also planted it with geranium for a window box, looked really neat, but I most of my geraniums like a lot of sun.

I will get some begonias, and where would I find the iresine and helichrysum? Just at a regular garden center? Thanks!

| I didn't mention anything about helichrysum, don't know what it is, but I got the iresine (and geraniums in the photo) at Lowe's last year back on a rack of plants that had gone droopy for 1/2 price. It's tough. I let some of it wilt, watered it, and it came right back. Of course, you can't neglect it for very long and it wouldn't like dry conditions, I don't think. If you can't find any, I could send you some for postage, someone will have to advise me how to pack it. I rooted up bunches of it in plastic cups for a plant sale and can sure spare 4 or so. Then you could root whatever you wanted for yourself. Here is a photo I took last year. It almost touched the ground before I brought the window box in the house, got much thicker, and when the sun hit it in late afternoon, it was such a pretty red. Call around to see if you can find some, and if you can't email me at aglessREMOVETHIS@earthlink.net
