Before & After Pictures!

I thought you folks might enjoy looking at the results of our labour this year so far...

We purchased the 1/4 acre Toronto suburban property we'd been renting back in December/06. This is our first gardening season as homeowners!

These are pictures of the shade garden in the very back of the yard, taken from the centre of the yard from March/07 to May 21/07.

Lots more to do! But it's so worth it, especially when we can see our progress. Comments or suggestions are most welcome. Happy gardening!

Selkie..it looks fabulous! You can enjoy the fruits of your efforts by relaxing on that hammock and the chairs. So sit down relax and take it all in. Thank you for sharing.

What a lot of work, and what progress. You've created a lovely shade garden without trying to make a woodland setting into something it's not. And, obviously, your cat likes it, too :)

I'm always worried about placing hostas in what I think of as "dry shade" and, on the other hand, I worry about battling snails. How are your plantings doing so far in this area?

Is that ditch that I see in some of the images for drainage? (there seems to be some meltwater puddling in that first image you showed)

I just love "marginated" hostas in shady spots. They really brighten things up. Please keep posting pics of this area as things fill in - I'm looking for inspiration for my shaded front yard.

Thanks for the kind comments. :)

Heid, I enjoy that hammock in the shade every chance I get!

Chris, all of our plantings seem to be doing quite well so far. I don't worry too much about snails, since we have a few night visitors who like to eat them (we welcome raccoon, skunk and possum). Haven't seen any damage yet.

Yes, that is a dry creek you see. The whole area floods in Spring, so we dug up a creek to help contain the melt before it runs off to the lake (picking up pollution along the way). We'll see how well it works next year.

All of our cats love it! Still working on coaxing Willow (the beige cat) into the hammock with me. He's not too sure about that one yet.
