Where to find true tigerlilies?

Some of you mentioned growing these in the shade. I have a fondness for them. My mom grew them when I was a child, and I loved them. However, I have not seen them anywhere in my area (Indianapolis) for sale. Where do I find them? All I see here are the common orange "ditch lilies. I have not seen a true tiger lily since I was very little.

You are referring to the orange-red lily with dark brown/black dots? That is what I think of as a tiger lily. If so, they are easily grown from the black seeds that grow down the stem. It may take a little longer than transplanting plants, but not much longer. Almost every seed (or whatever they are called) that touches the ground does root. I could send you some of those later in the summer. Let me know.

Mine were at my house when I bought it. The ones I have at this house came from the old when I moved....I didn't know they were hard to find. Asiatic lilies are so popular I suppose that is what is most available.

Check Van Engelen or John Scheepers catalogs for a good selection or just google on it. They are available at all the nurseries and big box stores. I found bulbs at discount stores for $1 last yr. I planted some into containers with my dahlias 2-3 yrs ago - the seeds sprouted and I planted them out - this yr they are full of buds so it didn't really take that long. Now waiting to find out what colors because I don't remember at all.

I bought mine from MIchigan Bulb online. They were gorgeous earlier this year. These are also biennial, so I will get to see them again soon.

I don't know where you got the idea Tiger Lilies are biennials. They are not. They are bulbs and they come back year after year. I have some that have beeng growing in my yard for over 20 years. I'm glad to hear you had good luck with what you purchased from Michigan Bulb because most people don't.

I have Tiger Lily. What seems to happen is the seeds drop to the ground and germinate in the same summer and they grow one single little 'leaf' out of the ground. Then, the next year, it comes up with it's tall stalk and flowers. I don't know if that defines a bienniel or my Tiger Lily just behave strange in my zone.
