Almost all mail-order bulb companies sell hyacinth bulbs; they deliver them at the best time for planting. You might be able to find some bulbs in a garden shop or Wal Mart, but by this time they may not be in very good shape. I think they're usually planted in the fall.

I just planted a little pot of Lily of the Valley this evening, which I expect will survive, it had roots. If you know anyone who has any in soft garden soil, it might be worth trying to ask to dig a few up. They spread by underground runners, though, and when you go straight down you don't always get many roots. Without roots, you would have to set them in a glass of water (a green glass works well, if you have one) until they develop some, then plant.

I have dry clay where most of my Lily of the Valley grows, and my experience is it is well worth the cost to purchase some in a small pot. You may have to call around to see if any of the garden centers or nurseries near you have it; or you could mail order some. There are a few variations. One has pink flowers; and I believe there are both small and large sizes of Lily of the Valley. It spreads so much in some peoples' gardens that they consider it invasive, but I have the opposite problem.

Look for hyacinth bulbs in the fall. That's the time to plant them.
