What's eating my plants?

I keep trying to get my back shade garden going....with astilbe, hosta, lamium, caladium and a few coleus. But something is chewing on the leaves. The coleus are almost entirely eaten up. I was thinking it was the work of slugs, but I do see a chipmunk running around the birdfeeders. Please offer advice! Thanks.

It's most likely slugs. I have BIG slug problems in my gardens, all of them, worst is shade. They especially love Coleus, Hosta and Lamium. I buy lots of slug bait and sprinkle around the plants once a week. I also hand pick the critters after it rains, and you can trap them in trays of beer, under wood or rocks, they like anyplace cool & dark. Good luck! Jen

Jen, Thanks....I'm sure you're right. It's just that I couldn't believe slugs could have dessimated my plants that much.

Go out at night with a flashlight and check. Earwigs could be munching along with the slugs. Janet's Garden

Okay, I went out with the flashlight and saw the slugs at work! Disgusting. I sprayed them with an ammonia/water mix and tomorrow I will look for the organic slug baits. Thanks for the advice! |
