Shade and sand - a DE beachhouse dilemma!

After seeing the GardenWeb forums come up in almost every web search I do, I finally decided to join!

I'm a fairly new gardener, working mostly without a really good plan or understanding of what works best for my yard. I have an awkward combination -- lots of shade from a yard full of oak trees (lots of diffused light, some full sun for 2-3 hours but then shade after that, some heavy shade), and sand, sand, sand, since I live just a block from the bay in southern Delaware.

I'd rather plant things that naturally do ok (I'm past dreaming about "do well") in this type of environment without heavily augmenting the soil. I'm willing to soup things up when I plant, but I don't want a high-maintenance garden that requires me to do a lot to keep my plants happy in soil they really don't like to begin with!

I'm looking for plant suggestions, both perinneals and annuals. I love color, love flowers, but love (well, NEED) low-maintenance more.

Thanks for any help and suggestions you can give!

Leslie
