Need easy plants for an impossibly shady area.

I am a novice gardener planning a small project in my yard in a spot where I'm not sure anything can grow! My second story 12 x 20ft deck creates a nice little sitting area beneath it on ground level, but I hate the look of the metal colums supporting it. My "plan" is to build some large planter boxes that would span the length of two colums each and to plant a mix of climbing and non-climbing perenials. My concern is that the area gets almost NO sunlight...only a few early morning hours...then as the sun rises over the house, it is completely shaded - even on the sides as it is blocked by a garage. I love color, but know that may not be possible...up for any suggestions, but I do want to find some hardy and easy to care for plants that will thrive after all the work is complete.
