Need narrow, vertical evergreen for pots on shaded porch

Against the advice of my local nursery, I put two Japanese holly plants in pots on either side of my front door, which is under an overhang and shaded all day. Alas, the hollies are starting to look pretty poor and I'm going to attempt to save them by planting them in a sunny section of my backyard.

Can anybody recommend replacements? I chose the Japanese plants because they are evergreen and grow straight up - I don't have much horizontal space on either side of the door and I like the sleek vertical look of the Japanese holly. I'm not sure how big the pots are, I'd guess maybe 7-10 gallons, but the opening on them is somewhat limiting as its probably only about 8" in diameter. Help is appreciated.

I'm having reasonable success under similar conditions with a Graham Blandy boxwood. North side of my house, beside the door, must hand water.

About once every three weeks I lift it down onto the grass where it can get some extra sun for a few hours.

It's growing slowly, but that is ideal for where I have it.

Thanks, I will give one a try. My poor Japanese Hollies are about to kick the bucket!

Hopefully the Graham Blandy Boxwoods will not be too hard to find at the local nursery or HD.

I am in the same situation, but my pots are not as deep. Have you had success with the Graham Blandy Boxwoods? What plant did you finally decide on?

I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I went with a couple of artificial spiral topiaries. I had already lost at least $150 on various plants that had died. The artificial plants look good and will never die!!
