Trees doing *unexpectedly* well in shade

Most of the trees we like say "full sun" on their label at the garden center.

However, I suspect that some can make do with far less sun than we are led to believe.

Taking a walk around my east tennessee neighborhood, I've noticed Hemlocks and other ever greens making a beautiful understory (with Oaks towering above them.

There are hardly any spots of my yard that get more than four or five hours of sun due to the hills and super tall trees all around.

I've noticed that my Knock Out Roses are blooming nicely with 4 hours of sun, but I'd like to learn about trees that do OK with lesser amounts of sun.

So are hemlocks known for shade tolerance? I'd love to create a similar understory.

What other suprises have you discovered about "full sun" trees doing well in not-so-full sun conditions?
