Moving to Sc water oak ?

I am moving to SC soon and thinking of buying a house this surrounded by native trees. The lot is 1.45 acres. My SIL lives nearby and says many of the trees on the property are water oaks which like walnut trees are near impossible to garden under. I was wondering if this is true and should I consider maybe another property that is only partly wooded? I live now in NJ Z6 and only have 100 x 100 lot on which I have done various types of perennial gardens; shade, wet, sun, native for over 25 years. I don't want to stop gardening; are the trees a big problem?

RE: Moving to Sc water oak ?

I have 2 Water Oaks, Quercus nigra, that are about 50 years old. I have never had a problem growing any shade tolerant plant under them, during the 42 years i have lived and gardened here. Oaks are in the Beech Family, Fagaceae, and are not related to Walnuts. The Black Walnut, Juglans nigra would present a problem, of course.
