under lilacs

On the east side of a hot, full sun garden my neighbour's lilacs and a bamboo type plant shoot both up and over.

Across the path, I have drummond phlox (red), tall grass, allium (purply), then white phlox.

What could I plant that would be complementary, in both height and colour, to the bamboo/lilacs and to the plants across the path?

Thanks!

I use Variegated Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum odoratum) in a similar situation. Hope this helps.
