Deckscaping design around shady deck

I have recently constructed a low-lying 16 x 20 ft. mahoghany deck with a hidden fastening system. The deck is on the northern face of my property. It sits adjacent to a water feature with boulders, and a Japanese theme (maple, bamboo, ferns and grasses). The cut angle side of the deck cannot be planted as the dirt just barely hovers over an ancient tree stump. The side closest to the house and window has been planted with bamboo. I am hoping for suggestings to incorporate the deck into an Asian-themed landscape. The clay soil will probably need amending and suggestions are welcome here, as well.

Here is a link that might be useful: deck.jpg

Are you looking for something tall, medium, short? How about hostas?

Hostas are a good suggestion. My 1/3 acre lot has numerous hostas. Since the view into the yard from the French doors is a concern, I would think that the plantings would be short to medium in size along the front edge and the sides would be of lesser concern. Mostly hoping for a good landscape design.

Since you are doing an Asian theme the groundcover Sanicula caerulescens comes to mind, as it is a native to China. These little plants only grow about six inches tall and spread twelve inches; in your zone these plants may stay evergreen. The paintbrush blue flowers are beautiful on top of the bronze finished foliage. They are hard to find though; I know Streambank Gardens has them. Other Asia native plants that love shade are corydalis, polystichum(evergreen fern), and Athyrium niponicum(Japanese Painted Fern).

Another suggestion for the shade are Toad Lilies. They are beautiful and almost orchid like. They love the shade and sound like they would fit in beautifully.
Peace
