Impossible conditions, I fear

Down by the mailbox, I'd love to plant almost anything that could cope with the impossible conditions :

Shade- deep shade. High oak canopy, pines across the narrow road -- some scraggly mountain laurel. Faces north. Some thriving weeds that I just pull the least attractive of. I planted vinca there two years ago, and it's doing well, thanks to a rainy summer. A few clumps of daylilies have survived, but not flourished.

Biggest problem is that my driveway is a quarter-mile round trip. No hose can reach, and all maintenance requires driving there (I'm not getting any younger). It's on a slope, so mulch washes away, as well as any added soil.

Would lilies-of-the-valley work? I've always avoided them because of their invasiveness, but I'd welcome something invasive there if it would grow. Oh yes -- the deer are rampant! Just across that road is a nature preserve.

Pat (beginning to look at plastic flowers in desperation)
