Tall shady plants Cimicifuga vs Goats Beard vs Osterich fern

I am helping my inlaw out with their fron yard which is dominated literally by a 35 year old silver maple. They currently have lily of the valley and vinca minor and some hosts growing around the trunk of the tree. The tree cast a dark shadow against the house, so it's tough grow something there.

Originally, they planted a mugo pine there, but it died.

Currently, I planted an osterich fern and some columbine. The columbine grew tall and got knock down by the wind. The fern is still there and grew a bit but is starting to get some brown leaves.

Question, what does better in a dryish shade? Cimicifuga, or Goats Beard, or Osterich fern. I am debating adding one of the plants next year.

thanks.

Paul
