dry shade area under overhang

I am tired of the area under the wide overhang in the front of our house. It is in the shade, faces south and is shaded by two large oak trees ( thinnned out by the 3 hurricanes!). What can I plant there for color now and then in the spring, summer? I use caladiums around the island where the oak trees are along with impatiens. Would some kind of lillies work or do they need sun? Does anyone use hostas here in Central Florida. The area is very dry and the soil is poor. I would probably have to amend the bed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
