Hi I would like a relatively fast growing shrub (up to 6 feet) for a shaded area..... mixed degrees of moisture..... acidic...... I would like one that is evergreen..... has nice flowers or perhaps useful......(for wildlife or myself) berries..... or onramental (berries) Thanks....... :)

Skimmia is a good choice, but you will need both a male and female clone for berry production. Skimmias NEED shade and even moisture to avoid damage from mites. Sarcococca is another great shade shrub choice - several species with varying heights to choose from but all will produce intensely fragrant small white flowers in late winter, often followed by black or dark red berries. Other possibilities include rhododedrons, evergreen azaleas, nandina, aucuba and for non-evergreen choices, kerria, ribes (flowering currants), shrub dogwoods, or hydrangeas.

eleagnus is fast growing and can go in the shade or in sun. The flowers aren't conspicuous, but they are very fragrant and travel large distances. They have berries for wildlife, also.

A great favorite of mine is Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), which has glossy, somewhat elongated evergreen leaves and intensely fragrant white bottlebrush flowers in the spring. They thrive in the shade and are also virtually deer proof. The prettiest variety is the "small" version, 'Otto Luykens,' which tops out at 4' or 5' tall (and the same spread). All are low- to no-maintenance..

I second Cherry Laurel as a fast growing, no maintanace shrub for shade, but... it has to be in shade in a winter too, otherwise will have a severe sun burns.
Also, it is susseptible to Prunus shot hole and plant may become unsightly.
