Filler plants by seed?

I am patiently waiting on my shade loving shrubs to grow. You name it, I've got a baby one planted! But in the meantime I would like some flowering or foliage plants to put in the area as filler. It's a large area.

I'm planning on winter sowing, figuring that it might be the cheapest way to get "filler" plants.

Any suggestions on seeds I could buy?

Texas is dry and I water by drip irrigation only once a week (but for 4 to 8 hours). So I don't think impatiens or coleus would work since they need more water than I am willing to give.

Half of the area gets a couple of hours of morning sun. The other half is no direct sun, maybe some filtered or indirect.

Thanks!

Carrie
