containers in the shade

Hello all - I am a visitor from the Antique Rose Forum - but drew the name of a relative for a Christmas present and this is what I need:
She lives in a wonderful house in the woods, with very little sun except on the north facing deck. Every window, even the garage, has window boxes, and she has boxes on the deck railing. She also has a patio, shaded by oak trees and evergreens.
She wants to go beyond impatiens.
Can you recommend some book title for someone whose gardening is all in the shade and in containers?

RE: containers in the shade

"The Complete Shade Gardener", by George Schenk may be the way to go. It is not limited to container gardening and may even touch on it only lightly, but there is nothing that can grow in the ground that can't be adapted to containers as well, at least on a temporary basis. And this is an excellent book on gardening in a shady location.

Or you may want to look at books that focus on foliage like "The Foliage Garden", by Becke Davis. There is a huge number of great plants suited for shade that offer primary attraction through the colors, shape and texture of their foliage. There is a lot more to shade gardening than just impatiens or even just flowering perennials and annuals :-)
