A potted white Hydrangea

I have a hydrangea of some sort that when I rec'vd it it was just a big thick root in a 5gal bucket of water which stayed outside all winter (I thought it was dead for sure)I kept water in the bucket in the spring I noticed new growth and was excited because the lady that gave it to me had suddenly passed away so now the plant is sentimental we potted it and it grew and produced one white cluster.I have bought a house and want to put it in the ground now, when should I do this, should I cut it back? and what should I do to help it to produce more blooms? any help would be greatly appreciated..
