Melon and squash for small spaces

What are everyone's favorite melon and squash (particularly winter) varieties for small spaces? I love winter squash but have never attempted to grow it because I thought it grew on huge vines. I've since read about cultivars like Burpee's Butterbush, various acorn squash, etc. Dare I get my hopes up that I can grow winter squash on my little patch of land and/or containers?

I kinda gave up on squash and melons in the last few years; put my emphasis on other things.

But there are varieites that will work, especially if you want to trellis the vines. (I used old panty hose to make slings for the fruit!)

Delicata squash is one that worked for me, and the 8-ball zucchini. A friend of mine has grown Wee-Be-Little pumpkins and really likes them.

Thanks for the suggestions, Alison. I'm currently growing two containers of papaya/pear summer squash and have been considering trying Cornell's Bush Delicata, too.

The biggest thing is to train them vertically if you have a small space or containter.
