That horse manure was hot because of the Nitrogen that was feeding the bacteria at work digesting it and converting it into something plants can use. Depending on a number of things that manure could put too much N into your planting beds not likely to be consuming N.

That manure mixed into the soil could be ready for planting in two or three weeks, depending on what else was put into the soil with the manure.

Any ideas of what to put in? I know there was a decent amount of wood chips/sawdust in there as well.

Organic matter, vegetative waste, compost, depending on what condition that soil is in. You want to try to maintain about 6 to 8 percent humus levels in the soil.

What you got was "soiled bedding" ... the sawdust or wood chip stall filler with the urine and feces from the horses. It can be "hotter" then plain manure because of the extra nitrogen in the urine.

However, it's decomposing like mad and you should be able to plant in it in a couple of weeks.

I deal with a lot a of horse manure/bedding and have used it at every stage from fresh to a couple years old. I have never had any problems with it burning my plants because it is too hot. I think you have two issues.

1) The woody bedding temporarily ties up nitrogen especially if it has been incorporated into the soil. Amending with nitrogen is an easy immediate fix.

2) For food crops you want the manure 90--120 days old at harvest (there are different standards you should read and decide for yourself what you are comfortable with.)

The easiest fix issues for both issues is simply time.

Definitely the ammonia smell was excess nitrogen escaping. Since there was woody material in there, there could be hot spots with lots of urine and other parts with very little. Hard to say what the final balance is after mixing it into the soil.

How thick of a layer did you put down and how deep was that tilled in?

I would plant some things and see how it goes. Watch for signs of too much or too little N.

If it is well mixed you are good to go. If it is not well mixed, mix it again, and water. The smell dissipates quickly when the pile is balanced.
