Seeds' Prices - What do you think?

Hello everybody!
Yesterday I was at Target buying my things.. I found a display of seeds from Garden Place, Sean Conway and Burpee. I couldn't help myself... I bought more than a couple of packets... ;) The question is... I have a Burpee catalog and I compared the prices and .. wow... what a difference! Like 1.69 to 2.95(without s&h) to my favor (thanks God).
Do you think there is a quality issue that make them cheaper in the store?
Diana
PD I know it is not a question of quantity because I count the seeds in one packet. The cheaper one has more seeds actually! |

It is like anything else. There are people that swear by Burpee, insist Wal-Mart is the only place to shop, and their favourite politician can do no wrong. There will always be enough narrow-minded people to keep all three in business.

Seed growers grade their seed for specific markets and distribute it to commercial companies like Burpee the same way a farmer grades his produce. Seed for farm/commercial growers is a higher quality than for the home grower. The farm/commercial growers require higher standards than we, the home grower, do (i.e. higher germination rates and plant vigor = the higher yields). Another factor affecting price is how the seed is handled and packaged and if it is mixed with older seed. Some companies mix older seed with fresh seed to keep the germination rate at a percentage that is within acceptable germination standards for the consumer, thus saving on their bottom line. Some companies are very careful in the packaging of their seed to ensure good quality, while others go to great lengths to grab our attention and our money with high color photographs of the plant. This cost for packaging is translated into higher costs at the cash register. They might also be taking measures to ensure good quality seed but personally, I would rather not spend my money on eye candy.

I have found that some of the store packets had fewer seeds than their catalog counterpart. Always pays to check.

I found a good online site. They give generous amounts of seed at fair prices. They seem to be new so service is good. www.mggardenfaerie.com
