 o
scottish moss seed source?

Does anyone know where I can get Scottish (or Scotch) Moss seed? I have sources for Irish Moss, but can't find anything for seed for Scottish Moss. I've searched the web and come up with only plants. The Irish Moss is grown so easily from seed, that I really would like to try to grow some Scotch. This moss is the one that is a more chartruese color. Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

- Scottish Moss is only propagated vegetively through division. There is no seed available for this plant - believe me, I work for a commercial seed company and customers ask for it on occasion... I checked with the major seed suppliers and breeders and the report back was that there is no seed available for this plant, never has been and never will be! The Scottish Moss is a varient of Irish Moss and can only be purchased as a growing plant.

I just got some scottish moss and some irish moss to grow and cover an unsightly concrete porch. I have no idea how to grow these or propagate them so they will spread well. Any advise, help, links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your time!

RE: scottish moss seed source?

Scottish Moss does produce seeds. They are the sized of a fly speck and hard to gather, but I have done so as of last summer, but as yet, I have not planted the seed. The small white flower, after it finishes it's bloom and slightly browns, contains the seeds (they are very black) and you can see them held in the blossom. If you wait too long to gather them, the seeds fall out onto the moss and are irretrievable, so it's a good idea to check the blossom often ...... even daily, if possible.

As the moss growth habit is rather fast, another way to propagate is to just keep cutting off new growth or dividing and planting .... making sure you get roots.
