Nurseries in the Midwest

Hi All --
New to this web site and forum. I am looking for sources of rare and unusual plants (that includes perennials, annuals, shrubs, water plants) -- specialty nurseries, as it were. I live in the Midwest and don't mind driving several hours to a nursery as I would prefer viewing the plants I am about to purchase. Since we are talking about the rarer varieties or cultivars, this excludes places such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Costco, Loews, K-Mart, feed stores, etc. What I'm looking for are nurseries such as Hornbakers that specialize in hostas, daylilies and iris. I don't care if they are big or small, as long as they have healthy, unusual plants. I'm sure there are many extra- ordinary gems of a nursery out there that I just don't know anything about, but other plant nuts, like myself, do. Would you mind sharing them with me? For the fall season, let's limit them to IL, IN, WI, MI and Ohio.
Thanks in advance. |

This may be a waste of time considering the time lapse, but if you ever get over near Ft. Wayne, here's a place I highly recommend.

Thank you. I stopped by Blue River Nursery about two months ago, and came home with a trunk full of interesting plants.

If the plants you've purchased, and liked, have the grower's name on the tag. You may want to cantact them, and find out who carries their product in your area.

If you ever get downstate, straight down I57, stop in Altamont at Alwerdt's. They have a wide variety, including your specifics, and have gardens that include mature plants of most of the varieties they sell. Annuals & perennials for sun & shade, shrubs, roses, aquatics, trees, vines, etc.

Helmick's in Peoria, IL have a huge variety of Hostas. They are more of a "backyard" greenhouse, but well worth the trip if it is close to you. Email me for directions if you are interested.

If you want to take a real road trip, try Homewood Farms (near Butler, Ohio) and Wade and Gatton Nursery near Bellville, Ohio. If you are interested in more information, e-mail me directly. Eleanor

Hidden Gardens in Hinsdale always has some interesting surprises, The Growing Place in Naperville and Aurora offers incredible variety, and I'll second the Planter's Palette suggestion.
