Cast Iron Plants

I met a neighbor of my uncle in Durham this weekend. He had beautiful cast iron plants in his yard. I can't seem to find a source of any that are a decent size. Can anyone help?

RE: Cast Iron Plants

Monrovia has a website where you enter your zipcode and they inform you of retailers selling things like aspidistra eliator.

Have you asked the House Plants Forum folks? Since your plant is often grown indoors, they might know. Or try the exchange lists. Maureen

Here is a link that might be useful: Monrovia

RE: Cast Iron Plants

I don't know about the "ordinary" Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant)--I grow one I picked up at a bricks-and-mortar nursery in California, with a stripe down the center of the leaf. I also grow 'Asahi', which I mail-ordered from Plant Delights (plantdelights.com). Asiatica Nursery (has a website but I don't have the URL memorized, so just put the name into Google) has a whole lot of "fancy" Aspidistras ranging from 'Asahi' to wonderful stripey ones and spotted ones and big leaved ones and little leaved ones. They aren't inexpensive, but it's fun to look. Monrovia Nursery, mentioned by momamao, does carry Aspidistra and if you can find a local nursery that orders from them, they could get one in for you. Also comb the houseplant sections of big-box stores: chances are, you could score one or two fairly cheaply if you go back regularly and keep looking. Cool stuff turns up at our local Lowe's from time to time.
