well, I'm trying to figure out how to post a photo, not having a lot of luck but will keep searching the help links. As far as a description goes, this looks like a jasmine---somewhat dark green, slender pointed leaves on a fairly vigorous vine with an incredibly massive and deep root system (of course, that could be due to the fact that it's probably 20 or 30 years old.)I expect that when it blooms I'll be able to identify it, and it has some little buds on it, but I don't know when they will mature and open and I'm rather anxious to figure out what it is. will keep working on posting a photo. Are the leaves compound or simple? Alternate or opposite?

Please remember that there are true jasmines, and there are plants that are called jasmine but aren't remotely related, and then there is jessamine. Whew!!

Thank you so much, rhizo, for that link. I am now fairly sure that it's a carolina jessamine. I thought I remembered Mother saying it wasn't a true jasmine, but just couldn't find the link I needed to confirm this. Thank you for solving the mystery! I have transplanted it to my own yard and I just hate having something whose proper name I don't know. And, by the way, so far it seems to be tolerating the transplant very well. I moved it 3 weeks ago.

I sort of thought that it might be a Carolina jessamine, since you mentioned that it was covered with buds....which they would be right now.
