Crape Myrtle Pruning

I have been reading up about pruning & not pruning of crape myrtle trees. I have two, one twice the height of my house and a smaller one about the height of the house. During the last hurricane season the big one had damaage from the winds twisting the long braches and breaking them. I would like to give them a chance to have less damage this season and prune them. The smaller one will be easy and I can prune back 1/3 of the tree and the branch end will be only about 1" and smaller in diameter. The bigger one I will need professionally done but can I take 1/3 off safely. The tree people want to take more down but I said no. They always over tend to trim trees. I am not looking to do this every year but to make the tree stronger in the long run. They are beautiful.
